Ruben Alvarez | Different, Not Less
Ruben Alvarez has worked in ministry for more than 20 years, the majority of that time with Young Life Capernaum, an organization founded in 1986 in San Jose, California to give young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities the chance to experience fun and adventure, develop fulfilling friendships and challenge their limits while building self-esteem through club, camp and other activities. As an adult with a disability and the father of a 10-year-old daughter with a disability, he felt called to minister specifically to children and youth with disabilities as well as families of children with special needs.
Three years ago, the Alvarez family (Ruben and his wife Renee, three daughters and a cat) moved from California to Greenville, South Carolina to join the team at David’s Table. Similar to Young Life, David’s Table is a faith-based organization working with church and parachurch groups to strengthen or expand existing youth ministries to include positive examples, experiences and opportunities for teens and young adults with disabilities and special needs. Ruben is a licensed, ordained minister through Dayspring Ministries and certified in Urban Youth and Family Ministry through the Fuller Youth Institute in Pasadena, Calif. He’s also an accomplished motivational speaker and writer, most notably penning a manuscript that is now being written into a screenplay.
