Creative people find ways to express their thoughts and ideas. Then they find new ways of expressing new thoughts and ideas—new pathways to engagement and communication, perhaps a conversation with the audience.
Choreographer Twyla Tharp describes how she begins: “I walk into a large white room. It’s a dance studio…there’s a boom box in the corner. The floor is clean…and the room is empty.”
Ric Standridge shares a favorite quote on his website:
“The canvas is perfect just the way it is, stretched tight, white…so, when someone places a brush against the canvas, there is a war going on, between the artist and the canvas…and most of the time the canvas wins…unless you are Picasso.” – Picasso
Then Ric offers a response:
“So with brush in hand, an ear full of music and mouth full of wine, I go to war…and I, too, win the war, Master Picasso!” – RS
This creative “war” is what we should expect on April 10 as Greenville artist Ric Standridge and music artist and producer Tavo Ramirez take over the TEDxGreenville stage—their blank canvas. Expect music, suspense and excitement woven into large canvases. Expect layering of music and voice. Expect flowing color and movement. Expect the unexpected. Expect to be carried away, perchance to be transformed! Yes!!
Curator Lisa Marie Corley says the experience will be unlike anything witnessed by previous TEDxGreenville audiences. “This will be a spectacular, truly explosive feast for our senses,” she shares. “Ric is taking his renowned high-energy performance style to a new level as he pairs up with the phenomenal Tavo Ramirez. Their two-act work has been developed especially for the TEDxGreenville HeadVROOM audience.”
Ric and Tavo are born collaborators. Ric has worked in theatre in a multitude of executive, creative, on-stage and backstage roles. He has been painting to live music for over 10 years, often combining this mix with other on-stage activities, including painting models’ dresses on a live fashion runway! Tavo is one part of a 5-man musical group, Projekt Lotus, bringing his Latin- and soul-influenced flavor to their jazz-laced, hip-hoppy sound.
Creative to their combined core, this two-man collaboration is poised to wow our collective mind and soul in this performance designed to debut on the TEDxGreenville HeadVROOM stage.
