Are you ready for a performance artist with a powerful presence? Charlene Evans, a.k.a. Chiccy Baritone, “speaks life” through her poetry.
TEDxGreenville 2014 program team member, Reece Lyerly, gives us his team’s response to Chiccy. “Her spoken word performances blew our minds and touched our souls. Enough said.”
This South Carolina native solves problems and deals with life’s challenges through her poetry writing. Her toughest challenge, she says, was writing a poem for her mother’s funeral. “How do you write about the relationship to a woman who you credit your personality to? How do you write about her humor and beautiful spirit and how you loved her more than life itself?” Chiccy says that she misses her still. “I am so grateful for her support in everything I have done in my life, including all of the attention I have received for poetry.”
But Chiccy doesn’t linger in the past, welcoming every new day with her favorite beverage, a really good cup of coffee. “I’m truly a blessed woman and a huge coffee lover,” she says. When her love of travel takes her to locations such as Johannesburg, Durban, Mumbai, Jaipur, Jamaica and the Bahamas, she looks for the coffee. “Everywhere I travel I find out what’s the best coffee to buy.”
This coffee-drinking poet has been around the world and she’s worked on some interesting endeavors such as writing for Billy Graham’s Ransom website. She currently works for an international construction company, where she uses her degree in electrical engineering. “Working for a global company has afforded me the opportunity to see a lot of the world…” she says. “I love to travel…I get an itch after 3 to 4 months, if I have not traveled. It’s like clockwork.”
Besides continuous coffee-drinking and travel, Chiccy enjoys cooking. She is probably cranking up the heat right now, getting ready to cook an amazing and Unzipped performance on April 11.
